About Us

The California Magazine covers the business, technology, real estate, and culture of California — an economy that, taken alone, would rank among the largest in the world.

We write about the people making decisions inside that economy: the founders, operators, investors, and public officials whose choices show up later in everyone else's rent, job, and utility bill. Our interest is in what actually happened and why, not in speculation about what might.

What we publish

  • Reported features on companies, sectors, and the people running them.
  • Rankings and lists, each published alongside the methodology used to compile it.
  • Commentary from named contributors, clearly separated from reporting.
  • Interviews and long-form video and audio.

How we are funded

We are funded by advertising, reader subscriptions, and paid features commissioned by their subjects. Every paid feature carries a visible disclosure at the top of the article, and every link supplied by the subject of a paid feature is marked so that it passes no search ranking signal.

We publish the rules we hold ourselves to. Read our editorial standards.

Corrections

If we have published something inaccurate, tell us at corrections@thecaliforniamagazine.com. We correct errors on the article itself and update its revision date.
